Grace Kelly on a Picnic Capsule
I’ve talked about my mom on the blog before—how she’s my best friend, my confidante, and my ally. She’s often my patron as well, always supporting my creative endeavors. In exchange, I use that creativity to make things for her when I can. I’ve been dressing her since I was a teenager, so picking out things for her to wear comes naturally to me. Since I’m in capsule mode right now I decided to make a capsule for her, something to help elevate her style. I started to used common terms, like American Classic, or Euro Chic to describe her style, but my husband challenged me to be more creative and specific with my wording. So, I came up with Grace Kelly On a Picnic—polished, timeless, and easygoing style.
I find it really helpful to use words to describe a style because it helps to narrow down what you’re looking for. American Classic is, admittedly, broad, and Grace Kelly On a Picnic evokes a much more specific image. Grace had a sophisticated and somewhat formal public image, but in private she dressed much more casually while still maintaining her classic elegance. My mom is a fan, but her life doesn’t warrant something so formal, so I wanted to focus on the more casual side of things. Now, when my mom goes shopping, she can ask herself (or me), “Would Grace Kelly wear this on a picnic?”
This capsule was so much fun to make, that I’ve decided to start creating capsules based on specific styles that are not necessarily my own. Stay tuned for next week’s Bombshell in Paradise.
