A Plus Size Work Capsule

A Plus Size Work Capsule

So, my dear friend Jenna called me up a couple of weeks ago needing my help. She has somehow managed to have a perfectly professional career without ever dressing professionally, but she just got a new job that includes being in court, so the jig was up on her hitherto very casual wardrobe. She’s not super into fashion, so she asked me to join her on a shopping trip to pick out new work clothes. I’m not one to say no to shopping, even if it isn’t for me, so I met her at Lane Bryant and proceeded to create a work capsule on the fly.

It was super fun, y’all. Especially because when we first got there we were the only people in the store, and the 3 or 4 employees were bored and very eager to help us out. I felt like a celebrity stylist as I was stopping dutiful salesladies with a hand, “No florals, she’s edgier than that! Bring me a geometric print!”

Anyway, through trial and error we found the silhouettes that looked best on her figure and I chose coordinating pieces to make a really easy to mix and match capsule. Jenna may not be into fashion, but she has a lot of personality, so I didn’t want to go too corporate. Plus, she loves to be comfortable, so I wanted to honor that while still helping her to feel polished. She’s on the petite side, so we stuck with fitted pants that didn’t swamp her figure. Paired with flowy tops that skimmed her curves in a flattering way, and pieces to layer on top to add interest, and we had her uniform sorted. Like I said, she has an edginess to her natural style (she currently has pink hair) so I tried to pull in edgier details like animal print, studs, and plenty of black, as well.

After our very successful shopping trip, she kept texting me to tell her what outfits to wear, so in an effort to save my sanity, I made a digital version of her capsule so I could create outfit combinations for her to follow. So here it is—Jenna’s Work Capsule, created in the wild.

(P.S. She texted me after her first day in her new wardrobe and said that her boss told her that her stylist did an amazing job! Mission accomplished.)
