What I Wore This Week
I’m an outfit or two short this week because I went to the beach with my mom for a couple of days and didn’t take any pictures. Like none at all… of anything. I’m the worst at remembering to take pictures to document life; which is funny because I love photography, it was really my entry point into art making. But I’m more of an artistic photographer than a documentarian.
My grandmother was a great documentarian, and I have six boxes of photo albums in the closet under my stairs to prove it. My aunt was always grousing because my grandmother insisted on taking pictures at every gathering, and she hated having her picture taken. But now that she’s not here to do it, we mostly forget, unless the same aunt, ironically, insists we take a picture together. I think she appreciates what my grandmother was trying to do.
I like to tell myself that I forget to take pictures because I’m really living in the moment and not willing to take a step back to record it. I don’t know if this is really true, though. It’s more likely the mundane tendency to get distracted by my thoughts so that I don’t think about it until it’s too late that’s to blame. It’s why I haven’t really gotten into Instagram. But I’d like to, to a certain extent. I don’t want to have to think about it too much, or worry about getting likes. But, I like the idea of stopping sometime throughout the day to notice the beauty around me and share it, just for the sake of it. It’s never too late to start new habits.
